Good News All Around

Recently, I joined a local kickball league and became an army of however many strangers.  I don’t know anyone on my team; I was just randomly placed.  However, it was one of the best things to happen to me in a long time.  I never sign up for stuff without a “buddy”… just in case.  But this was well worth it.  Now I’ve convinced a crazy person that I know to join also.  I live a pretty sedentary lifestyle, so kickball once a week is helping me change that.

Too bad I am already dreading my game tonight.  I just really don’t feel like going.

After watching the Olympics, I have decided that my best friend and I will train to become the next great women’s double beach volleyball team.  Yes! Watch out for us in in London, 2012.  Meanwhile, I’ve been trying to get everyone else to :::who the hell is making all that noise behind me?!::: join the intramural league for volleyball here at school.  I’m trying to get an all black graduate student volleyball team. So far I have four people.  I’m sure all this excitement will die down before it’s time for the captain’s meeting and there will be no team. :(

In other good news, I spoke with my DGS (Director of Graduate Studies) today and he says I can sub in a class I took last semester for this kick-your-ass-all-semester-long-”were you even in class”-notes-on-your-paper-from-the-professor-course that I was originally signed up to take.  Now I just have to tell the professor that I’m auditing his class.  If he finds out I’m doing that, I’m sure he’ll come up with some reason to try and stop me. But I’m ready for him. Hi, Hater!

James Blake

I am the James Blake of what I do.  I call a spade a spade.  Did anyone else see the press conference after James Blake lost to Fernando Rodriguez?  Footage showed that Rodriguez’s tennis racket clearly hit a ball served by Blake before it went out of bounds.  The ball even changed direction.  But Rodriguez didn’t call it; he didn’t play honest.  And Blake blasted him for it later.

Check out the snappy response
Question: Could you describe what the issue was you were discussing with the chair umpire at 9-8?

James Blake: Yeah, hit a shot that hit Fernando’s racket and then went out. The umpire didn’t see that it hit his racket. Playing in the Olympics, in what’s supposed to be considered a gentleman’s sport, that’s a time to call it on yourself. Fernando looked me square in the eye and didn’t call it.

I’ve tried to play this game for as long as I can, you know, I make mistakes, but I try to do it with integrity, so my parents would be proud of the way I played. If that happened the other way, I never would have finished the match because my father would have pulled me off the court if I had acted that way.I’ve spoken all week about how much I’ve enjoyed the Olympic experience, how much I love the spirit of it, how much I love the other athletes, what they’ve sacrificed, and you appreciate that. And the guys go out and compete their hardest, win fair and square, lose fair and square. That’s a disappointing way to exit the tournament when you not only lose the match, but you lose a little faith in your fellow competitor.

Of course Rodriguez had a different take.  I would include his side of the story, but after watching the footage for myself – I can’t.
