This Sunday (or Monday), several area restaurants are donating 10% of their proceeds to the relief efforts in Haiti, either through the remarkable organization Partners in Health (http://photos.pih.org/home2.html) or the inspirational, locally-run Family Health Ministries (http://www.familyhm.org/). Eat out, enjoy, and contribute to a worthy cause!

Win Some, Lose Some.

Well I’ve been marginally productive today.

I was awake from 1am-7am thanks to drug*-induced sleep.  I was simply trying to clear the congestion and the next thing I knew, I’d been sleep for almost 5 hours.  This left me wide awake, and instead of doing the right thing (reading papers, working on my document), I surfed the internet and looked at people’s outfits on weardrobe.com.  So sad, but hey – you win some and you lose some.  I definitely lost that one.

At 8, I decided to make coffee cake muffins.  It was basically a coffee cake in a muffin liner.  I didn’t have the strength or energy to make anything else for lab meeting.  I ended up falling asleep from more drugs*. This led to too much spending at Wal-mart so my labmates could have a variety of food.  Not doing that again.  Can’t please everyone.  I lost and won because there was a lesson learned.

I stayed in lab until ~9pm and got a lot of stuff done for tomorrow.  It’s been so long since I’ve worked at the bench that I’ve felt somewhat awkward.  It was great to get my science mojo back.  I definitely WON that one.

Tomorrow I have a meeting with the Dean of the Graduate School and a departmental holiday party.  I’m making Spiced Pecans as an appetizer – I wanted to make pecan pie, but they had enough desserts.  I may make one anyway, and bring it in to Sunny.  Then, maybe I could convince her to take some pictures for me next week to document my winter wardrobe.  Sounds like a good trade to me…

I’m crashing a bar crawl on Saturday in downtown Raleigh.  I went last year, paid a bunch of money, and had a good time.  This year I plan to go, save that money, and still have a good time.  We’ll see how that works.

*Said drugs are simply Nyquil, Chloraseptic, and Maxifed. I will not be on A&E Intervention.

Yes, I’m Alive.

I haven’t updated in ages.  I haven’t really been reaching out to my friends – but there’s a reason for that.

I’ve been hella busy procrastinating.  I can’t seem to lock-in on my work, and it’s getting the best of me.  Plus, in efforts to be tech savvy, I overrode all my Blackberry contacts with the contacts on my computer.  So imagine ~400 numbers instantly deleted and replaced with the email addresses of a couple of professors and classmates.  Womp womp.  What am I gonna do with that?  At least I have my BBM contacts…

I’m back on my granola kick.  Granola is the one thing that allows me to eat yogurt.  Whenever I am working I have to snack.  It’s probably best that I don’t snack on fatty food like chips and Oreo’s.  So, granola seems to help me get it together without blowing up the size of a house.  I make my own into bars or as loose crumbles.  My recipe is loosely based on a recipe from www.joyfulabode.com.

ZDubb’s Granola
2 Cups Instant Oats
1 Cup Rolled Oats
1 Cup Rice Krispies
3/4 Cup Wheat Germ
1/2 Cup Golden Flax Seed Meal
3/4 Cup Sunflower Seeds
1 Handful of Millet
1/2 Cup of Sliced Almonds

Toast the above ingredients for 10 minutes @ 400deg F.

In a pot melt: 1/2 Cup Honey + 2 Tbsp Butter + 2 tsp Vanilla Extract + dash of salt.

Add ~12 oz of chopped dried fruit (I used Craisins, dates, cherries, and apricots) to the toasted ingredients.  Pour the honey mixture over all other ingredients, and mix well to evenly coat.

The end! <— If you plan to make crumbly granola

Put down wax paper and press into 9×13 pan if you want to make bars.  So yummy.

Week 1 of 15

So, I’ve been slacking on Amy’s 15 Week Challenge.

Anyway, this week’s challenge was to recreate a meal or something you enjoy into something a little bit healthier.  I decided to go with chicken salad.  Unfortunately, I don’t measure things out, so this is just a guesstimation.

Chicken Salad

Chop up some cooked curried chicken breasts
Chop up some celery
Rough chop a handful of Craisins
Dice 1/4 a sweet Vidalia onion
add a sprinkle of salt
1 cup of Fat Free Plain Yogurt

Mix it all together and eat on toasted wheat bread!

I like to believe that replacing fatty mcnatty mayonnaise with yogurt instantly makes this dish much healthier.  I hope this counts!

Not so Bad

I enjoyed my first green monster, but to ensure it wasn’t a fluke, I had another when I got home last night.

Survey says:
Nope not a fluke.

I started off this morning with one also.  So that puts me at 3 green monsters in 2 days! Whew!

***EDIT****

I realized that I haven’t really talked about what a green monster is…or maybe I have.  Anyway, my green monsters have been a combination of spinach, milk, protein powder, fruit, and peanut butter.

Today’s Green Monster:

2 HANDFULS SPINACH
1/2 CUP MILK
FROZEN PEACHES
3 STRAWBERRIES
1 SCOOP MUSCLE MILK

I popped that badboy in the blender for a while, and it was excellent.  It made way more than one cup, but guess what? I drank the whole blender full. Don’t judge me!

Now there’s something else I’d like to discuss.  Something that’s been bothering me for a while…

I hate when people bring unnecessary noise into my personal space.  I work with my desk facing in one direction and my co-worker sits directly behind me facing the other direction.  Our bench spaces are also oriented the same way.  Her fiance works in the same building – actually in the lab right next door.  However, he spends ~45% of his time over here at her desk.  It’s already tight with just me and her over here.  It’s the end of the day and he comes over and reads different news headlines outline to solicit discussion.  No sir, don’t try to force discussion.  And it’s not just that – he’s freakin yelling.  I am giving him the eye of death – still no concern.  I’m trying to not say anything because I’ve been known to be a little rude and harsh.  But I think a little correction is in order.
If I don’t say something, I might pull my hair out! – - – Help me, Tom Cruise.
