Last week’s soundtrack was: The-Dream’s Love v. Money

This has been a crazy week.  I feel like I cannot get anything done in the lab without slacking in every other area.  Like my advisor said, “Grad school is a lesson in efficiency.”

My project is taking off…thank God!  But I keep running into little snafu-s.  Molecular cloning is not my friend right now.  A couple weeks ago, I championed myself as the master of cloning troubleshooting.  Now, I’m face to face with a mystery.  Hopefully some additional controls will let me know where my experiment is going wrong.

I’m gearing up for my first committee meeting.  This is my first step towards my preliminary exam.  It’s something like the end of the world in my mind.  I know it’s coming, but I just don’t want to think about it.  Each day, I just try to chip away at this big block of chaos.

Thursday, I had the honor of hearing Dr. Lewis Johnson from FAMU speak to a group of minority graduate students in the sciences.  He presented a series of quotes from a variety of sources – like Benjamin Mays to Guinan from Star Trek The Next Generation – and spoke about how the applied to the graduate school process and entering academia.  It was pretty interesting.

My Evolutionary Genetics test went well … I believe.  My Dad laughs whenever I tell him that I think I did well on something so I’m going to celebrate.  He says it’s like grading my own paper – of course I’ll be lenient and explain the errors away.

I woke up this morning and treated myself to some strawberry pancakes.  I deserved something nice.  A cup of blueberry coffee and some Bisquick pancakes with fresh strawberries.  I didn’t even bother to make them from scratch.  Don’t judge me!

Well I’m headed to school to meet with this girl and discuss Drosophila seminal fluid proteins… yuck!  Then I have to prepare for the rest of this week in the lab.

I Would Never

What makes people so ridiculous? I mean seriously.

So, I’m back on the hunt for a place to stay.  My lease is up July 1, but I’ll probably moving into the next place a little bit sooner than that.  Either way, there are these condos that I love, and I actually have a friend who moved into one.

I was surfing on Craigslist this morning, and I realized that there’s a condo in that community for a very good price.  The listers didn’t say which building or what floor the unit was on.  So, I sent them an email and they asked me to come by and check it out.

I shoot him a text message when I’m on the way to the place: “Hey, I’m meeting some people in your neighborhood”

Low and behold: It’s right next door to the jerk I mentioned earlier. (Yes, I’m aware that he has morphed from a friend into a jerk – it happens.)

Initially I did not know this, so I’m like ugggh.  He replies: “cool. are you stopping by?”

I shoot back: “I’m next door”

He says: “Next door where?”

I say: “The unit next to yours”

Meanwhile, I’m FALLING IN LOVE with the place, which has a completely different floorplan than his, and is perfect for me.  I continue to chat with the owners then text him to let him know I’m no longer there.  His response?

“I told you to stop by”

::::STOP THE RECORD:::: You TOLD me to come by?  You have to know how much of a jerk he is to truly get the meaning behind all this.  I call, and we do phonetag for ~45 minutes.  When we finally speak, he says so you were looking at renting the place next door? I told him yes and that I didn’t know it was right beside him.  His first thought is “Oh, are you gonna rent it because that would be weird sharing bedroom walls with someone I know.” Dude, this is not about you.  He continues to bitch some more and get all up in my mix about how much the rent is there.  None of you business! If you’re so concerned do your own research.  Dude is mad nosey.

Everything was directly about him at no point did he ask if I really liked the place beyond whether or not I’d be his neighbor.  He didn’t say crap, knowing I’ve been struggling to find a place to move.  He did mention me once more, griping “I would never be next door to you and not even stop by and speak… that’s just rude… ”

If I move there, I hope his sentiments change.

SNOW DAY!

Filed under: School — Tags: — Dubbskii @ 10:57 am

Snow day in the land of Dubbskii.  I won’t be going outside unless I have to knock some snow/ice off the satellite.  Today I was supposed to meet with this girl to discuss our project for this class.  Note: these plans were made prior to the severe weather.  I sent her a message asking what time she wanted to meet tomorrow.  She replied, I thought we agreed to meet today.  :::BLANK FACE:::

Classes are canceled.  It has snowed and continues to snow.  What do I look like driving 20 minutes to school to talk to you about some random gene under selection pressure?  That definitely don’t look like me.  I gave her a swift response: “It’s snowing at my house. I don’t know where you live, but I will see you tomorrow.”

Is this bish crazy?  Must be.
