Current Obsessions

So, I’ve been living a pretty dull life these past few days.  I’ve had the chance to see some of my good friends – in real life and via Skype.  I’ve developed a couple of obsessions over the past two weeks, and I thought I’d share them.

1. Chai Tea.
Now I normally drink the Oregon Chai Tea Latte from either the concentrate or the powdered mix.  However, a couple of days ago, I went on a road trip with a friend.  I was moving rather slow because it was cold (there was even still snow on the ground), so she made me some hot tea.  And ohmygahhh – it was so yummy.  I enjoyed tea the entire car ride, and the next morning I went directly to EarthFare to stock up on it.  Oh Tazo Chai, how I love thee.

2. Victor and Rolf Eau Mega.
I went with an old college friend to Nordy’s this past week.  It was such a good time.  We tried on a gazillion lipglosses and  eyeshadows.  My favorite part was the fragrance counter though.  I knew it was bad news, but I figured I’d be safe because I just got Ed Hardy, Marc Jacobs Lola, and YSL Parisienne.  I was wrong.  I was totally in love with Victor and Rolf Eau Mega.  Now it is mine.  It’s super classy and I can’t get enough of it.

3. Fireside by Bath and Body Works.
Seriously? Everything in my house smells like this.

4. Chris Brown’s New Album.
I don’t care what anybody says – this is a good album.  There is a good mix of everything, and I simply cannot get enough.  One of my favorites is “I’ll Go”!!

5. Skype with New Mama and her baby.
I live for the very moment when Madi Bear gives me a karate chop and a “hiiiii-yaaaaaa.”

For the New Year, I’m just cooling out with some friends.  I did the partying thing last year, and I am so over it.  That’s definitely not my cup of tea for this year.  Whatever you do, I hope that you are safe!  Happy New Year!

All Morning

Filed under: Just Life — Dubbskii @ 11:55 am

I’ve been up all morning.  I’m soooo sleepy.  I’m at my desk looking crazy too.  Eating lunch is not an option; I’m taking a nap instead.

Don’t judge me.

White Flag

Filed under: Just Life — Dubbskii @ 10:27 am

Some days you just have to wave the white flag and surrender.  I did a gazillion dilutions and various conditions to really work out the kinks in this new system I’m trying to use in the lab.  I plated all these various concentrations on about 50 agar plates last night.  This morning I came into the lab very excited to see how everything turned out.  I opened the incubator, my tray of 1 gazillion plates was missing.  Breathe.  Maybe someone moved it so they could have space. I close the incubator and open it again. There’s plenty of space.  No one should have moved it. I walk back to my bench space.  And there are my plates – sitting on the tray on my desk.  CRAP!  That puts me a whole day behind.  But worse than that, it probably puts me a weekend behind because it’s supposed to snow tonight.  If it does, you can bet your bottom dollar that I will not be in the lab tomorrow morning. Le sigh.

On a more positive note, I went to bed like a normal person last night.  I woke up at 4am.  My body is definitely not used to that much sleep at once.  I couldn’t go back to sleep once I woke, so I made brownies for everyone in my lab.

I recently came across Chiara’s blog, The Blonde Salad.  I love her style.

I’ve been making my fantasy wishlist.  Over the next couple of days, I will share some items.
1. The Mother handbag from AfterTheApple.  I absolutely love this bag.  Too bad it’s $650.  I’d have to eat Ramen noodles until June 2010 to afford that.  But just look at how soft the leather is.  Ugghh – me and my expensive taste.

One day you will be mine.

One day you will be mine.

A friend just offered to buy this for me… if I agree to call him Big Daddy.  I don’t know about all that.  I think I’ll pass lol.

Win Some, Lose Some.

Well I’ve been marginally productive today.

I was awake from 1am-7am thanks to drug*-induced sleep.  I was simply trying to clear the congestion and the next thing I knew, I’d been sleep for almost 5 hours.  This left me wide awake, and instead of doing the right thing (reading papers, working on my document), I surfed the internet and looked at people’s outfits on weardrobe.com.  So sad, but hey – you win some and you lose some.  I definitely lost that one.

At 8, I decided to make coffee cake muffins.  It was basically a coffee cake in a muffin liner.  I didn’t have the strength or energy to make anything else for lab meeting.  I ended up falling asleep from more drugs*. This led to too much spending at Wal-mart so my labmates could have a variety of food.  Not doing that again.  Can’t please everyone.  I lost and won because there was a lesson learned.

I stayed in lab until ~9pm and got a lot of stuff done for tomorrow.  It’s been so long since I’ve worked at the bench that I’ve felt somewhat awkward.  It was great to get my science mojo back.  I definitely WON that one.

Tomorrow I have a meeting with the Dean of the Graduate School and a departmental holiday party.  I’m making Spiced Pecans as an appetizer – I wanted to make pecan pie, but they had enough desserts.  I may make one anyway, and bring it in to Sunny.  Then, maybe I could convince her to take some pictures for me next week to document my winter wardrobe.  Sounds like a good trade to me…

I’m crashing a bar crawl on Saturday in downtown Raleigh.  I went last year, paid a bunch of money, and had a good time.  This year I plan to go, save that money, and still have a good time.  We’ll see how that works.

*Said drugs are simply Nyquil, Chloraseptic, and Maxifed. I will not be on A&E Intervention.

Today’s Want.

Filed under: Wardrobe — Dubbskii @ 4:23 am

Everyday I find something on the internet that I feel I cannot live without.  This has inspired me to create a running feature called “Today’s Want.”  I’ll probably do it every couple of days.

Ruffle Cardigan

Ruffle Cardigan

Right now I can’t see myself living without this Wrapped In Ruffles Cardigan from Anthropologie.  I love the purple… and the black.  I know I wear a lot of dark colors, so it’d be nice to switch it up with turquoise or beige -but I like what I like.  Unfortunately, this comes with a pretty steep price tag of $128.  With all the holiday shopping I’ve been doing, I cannot afford this sweater right now.  But I’m keeping my eye on it, in case it goes on sale!
